Bauxite Tailings — Red-Mud Dewatering

The Challenges

Assess whether dewatering tubes could handle partially-neutralised caustic bauxite red mud — with a view to forming bund walls and reusing the dried residue as fill.

Our Approach

A tube was filled in a single pass with slurry taken straight from the tailings spigots. Even with no polymer dosing, the red mud dewatered well, cracking and drying over roughly two weeks.
